Guayaquil, xx June 2021 – América Móvil, parent company of Claro Ecuador, and Telxius Cable Ecuador, part of the Telefónica Group, have announced the landing of a new submarine fiber optic cable in Salinas, Ecuador. This submarine cable, called SPSC/Mistral, will significantly improve connectivity for millions of people in Ecuador, helping to bridge the digital divide.
The cable, with a length of approximately 7,300 kilometers and a transmission capacity of 132 Tbps (Terabits per second), will interconnect Latin America’s Pacific coast, as well as offer the lowest latency in the market between Guatemala and Chile. It will be the first submarine cable since 2001 to connect Puerto San José (Guatemala) to Valparaíso (Chile), with additional landing points in Salinas (Ecuador), Lurín (Peru) and Arica (Chile).
The SPSC/Mistral cable, which is scheduled to be ready for service (RFS) in August 2021, will contribute to offering the highest levels of service, reliability, and security, providing the country with more robust communications. This translates into a strengthening of cloud services, as well as greater protection and reliability in the traffic of national and international services.
Verónika Pazmiño Páliz, Directora Comercial Ecuador, Telxius Cable, commented “Mistral is coming to bolster the current infrastructure deployed by Telxius within the country. This new submarine cable is equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Together with the SAm-1 and PCCS, it will cover the accelerated growth in demand and the needs for connectivity and internet in Ecuador. Without a doubt, this is an unprecedented project from a technological and investment standpoint that confirms Telxius’ commitment to providing the best service and the best quality.”
“Nowadays, connectivity is key to the development of the regions. Projects such as SPSC/Mistral contribute to boosting the digitalization of our country, preparing it for the growing demand for future connectivity and expanding its development opportunities,” stated Alfredo Escobar, CEO of Claro Ecuador. “Claro has made sound investments that enable 96% of the national territory to be connected with more speed, more technology and more coverage, as we are part of the most robust telecommunications network that connects Ecuadorians.”
